This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Isabel,' from the nick. Ibb and diminutive Ibb-ot or Ibb-et. From Yorkshire down to Cornwall this was the favourite nurse-name of Isabel. But Yorkshire has the honour of originating several leading representatives of this list. Ibbotson is found in every village and town. I could furnish shoals of instances of Ibbot or Ebbot (v. Ebbetts) as girls' names in that county, but must be content with a few.

Although common to England, Yorkshire is the great centre of these forms, where Isabelle was the rival of Matilda in the surname period. Ibson becomes Ibison or Ibeson, just as Greenway becomes Greenaway; v. Ebbs. The diminutive forms, however, have made the greatest impress on our directories; v. Ibbett.
