This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Amery' or 'Emery,' which see. As is commonly the case in surnames, I has become the initial in place of E; compare Ebbot and Ibbott, Emms and Imms, Empson and Imeson, Ebbs and Ibbs. The 'b' in Imbrie is intrusive; compare Emblin for Emlin.

The first of the name recorded in Scotland appears to have been Emeric, a Lombard of Flanders, who was spoiled by John Crabbe of Berwick in 1329, and indemnified by the chamberlain (ER., I, p. 213). The escheat and forfeitere of Ade Emry, burgess of Dunblane, is recorded in 1424 (RMS., II, 16). Walter Ymery and Thomas Ymery were tenants of Conlony alias Condland in 1513 (Cambus., 9), and James Immerie in Dunfermline, 1563, appears also as Immerri (1567) and Immerrie (1569) (Dunfermline). John Imry was portioner of Fordell, 1579 (Inquis. Tuf., 1200). John Imbrie (with intrusive b), burgess freeman of Glasgow, 1611 (Burgesses), Thomas Imbrie was constable of the parish of Feme, 1633 (RPC., 2. ser. V, p. 93), and John Imbrie, coalgreive apud Kincerdine, 1697 (Inquis., 7802). The name also occers in the kirk-session records of Cask in the seventeenth century, John Imrie in Abernethie, 1618, and sevenal others named Imrie and Imbrie are recorded in the neighborhood (Dunblane). Payment was made to David Imbrie in St. Andrews, c. 1688 (PSAS., Liv, p. 238), and James Imbrie took the oath at Strickmartine, 1689 (RPC., 3. ser. XIV, p. 231). Imre 1548, Ymre 1547.
