A surname from Northern English and Scots Englis (Old English Englisc), meaning the English (man), in Latin documents Anglicus. Richard Anglicus witnessed David's great charter to Melrose, a. 1153 (Melros, 1). Adam le Englis witnessed a confirmation charter of the fishery in Torduff, c. 1194—1211 (Holm-Cultram, p. 35), and Walter Anglicus witnessed a charter by Alan, lord of Galloway to the Abbey of Kelso, a. 1208 (Kelso, p. 202). In 1296 Rauf le Engleys was commanded "to answer at law as a man at the king's faith and peace to all having claims against him" (Bain, II, 805). Several individuals of the name rendered homage in 1296: Johan le Engleys of Berwickshire, Phellipe le Engleys, Wautier le Engleys, and Richard le Engleys, all three of Lanarkshire, and Mawcolum le Engleys of Perthshire (ibid., p. 204,206, 209,212). Nisbet says that from Philip are descended the Inglises of Branksholm and Manor, and that the Inglises of Tarvet may be descended from Johan le Engleys. In 1296 Malcolm le fiz Lengleys claimed Kentyre as his heritage, and in 1300 he had a safe conduct by land or sea, with his men and galleys to herass the Scots (ibid., p. 225,294), Before 1321 Robert I ganted to Ade Barbitonsoris the toft in Moffat with two bovates of land adjacent "que quondam Willelmus dictus Ingles ad firmam tenuit in villa de Moffet de domino Vallis Anandie avo nostro" (RMS., I, 37). John Inglis was a forestaller in Aberdeen, 1402 (CRA., p. 385). Thomas Ynglis witnessed a renunciation by Walter Scott of Bukcleuch, 1449 (Soltre, p. 319). James Ynglis appears as canon of Glasgow, 1452 (REG., 373), and the name of Master Alexander Lenglis, archdeacon of St. Andrews, appears also as Inglys and English (Bain, IV, 1564). Alexander Inglyssh, ambassador of the king of Scotland, 1478, is probably the same person (ibid., 1454). The name was early carried to France and there appeered as D'Anglars. In Scotland the name also occers as Angel. Ingleis 1574, Inglish 1686, Inglisse 1680.
(Scottish) One who came from England, an Englishman.
The old Scottish form of ' English,' formerly applied to the descendants of Englishmen settled in Scotland, especially of prisoners taken by Malcolm III, from the northern counties in 1070. For years after that date, we are told, English servants or slaves were to be found in every village, and almost in every house. Singularly enough, the baronet family, though of Scottish origin, deduce from William Inglis, who had, in 1395, a grant of lands and this surname from Robert III., for killing an Englishman on the borders-Anglus at Anglum occidendo; truly as odd an origin as surname ever had.
An Englishman. The family are descended from Sir William Inglis, temp. Robert III.
The name was given in Scotland, to distinguish the family of some English settler. The Englishman. In the ancient records of the family the name Anglicus is often mentioned.
