This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Ingersaul,' i.e. the saule or sale of Inger; v. Inger and Sale or Saul (2). Similarly we find in the London Directory Plimsoll and Plimsaul, where the same suffix occurs. Where the spot is I cannot say. Sale, a hall (the Frenchsalle), is commonly found in the 12th, 13th, and 14th century registers. With the sharpened form Inkersoll, compare Inkerfield for Ingerfield (q.v).
