Isdaile Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Johannes de Esdale witnessed a notarial instrument, 1413 (Pollok, I, p. 146). Margaret Eskdale was repledged to liberty of burgh of Irvine, 1472 (Irvine, I, p. 28), James Esdaill was burgess there, 1493 (Macfarlane, II, p. 341). James Esdale, who held a tenement in Irvine, 1506, is mentioned in 1528 as James Eskdale, burgess of Irvine, and in 1540 as quondam James Esdaill (Irvine, I, p. 158,164, 169). Walter Esdaill was voter in parish of Qwilton (Coylton), 1513 (Ros, 52). Rolland Esdaile appears as witness in Glasgow, 1552 (Protocols, I). George Esdaile was burgess freeman of Glasgow, 1575, John Aisdaill the same, 1599, and John Esdaill ditto, 1620 (Burgesses). George Esdaill was retoured heir of John Esdaill in Muresyd, his father, in lands in paish of Kilwinning, 1643 (Retours, Ayr, 373). John Isdaill is recorded in parish of Donyng, 1669 (Dunblane), and George Esdaill of Cameron in parish of Bonhill, 1668 (Sasines, 1423). Bessie Esdaill was examined for the Test in 1685 (RPC., 3. ser. XI, p. 433). Not likely to be from Easdale in Argyllshire.

The Surnames of Scotland (1946) by George Fraser Black (1866-1948)

"At the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, 1685, the ancestor of this family, descended from an honourable house, then represented by the Baron D'Estaile, being a Protestant, fled from France, and lived and died in obscurity in England." Such is the account in B.L.G., which, however, shows no connection between the existing family and the refugee. The name appears to be derived either from Eskdale in Cumberland, or from Eskdaleside, co. York.
