The surname, Isern, is included in the group of Catalan surnames that come from common German names. The word comes from the Greek, isarn, which later was renamed in Latin to Isarnus.
The surname is documented in almost every book of heraldry, though the information bearing is very small. "Solar Catalan, Valencian, and Balearic" A. and A. Garcia Garraffa says the name is fully Catalan and a had solar house in the village of Vilassar. Proof of this is that a character known as Pere Isern, son of Vilassar and was knighted in 1677. In Catalonia there are also two different branches of the surname. The first house has a solar farm in the municipality of Vic. The second is in the Alt Emporda in Ventalló, where we find the palace Margarit, known popularly Ca l'Isern.
The arms of Isern Vilassarcarry corrugated truncated shield: the 1st. of azure satin; and 2nd. silver, two fish swimming gules. These weapons are documented in the "CatalancAdarga" Garmin and Duran, printed on page 220 of Volume 2nd. andc"General Noble Catalan" by Fèlix Domènech i Roura, the printedbooklet XII. Others bear the same surname: silver, star of azure.
