Greeks inhabited Asian Minor (currently Turkey) from Ancient times.
Anatolia remained multi-ethnic until the early 20th century. During World War I, the Armenian Genocide, the Greek genocide (especially in Pontus), and the Assyrian genocide almost entirely removed the ancient indigenous communities of Armenian, Greek, and Assyrian populations in Anatolia and surrounding regions. Following the Greco-Turkish War of 1919–1922, most remaining ethnic Anatolian Greeks were forced out during the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey. Many more have left Turkey since, leaving fewer than 5,000 Greeks in Anatolia today. Since the foundation of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, Anatolia has been within Turkey, its inhabitants being mainly Turks and Kurds.
A lot of Greeks didn't want to leave their homes and become refugees. That's why the Turks suggested they'll either stop talking Greek and learn the Turkish language or change their faith from Christians to Muslim, in an attempted to eliminate their identity. Truth is though, that they secretly spoke Greek at home, thus becoming fluent in both languages.
The ending -oglou suggests that the ancestors of people bearing the surname, chose to keep their religion and get rid of their Greek identity. Times were crucial and if they didn't do this, they wouldn't be able to survive and would most probably get killed by the Turks.
When things became worse and Greece and Turkey decided to search for common ground, most Greeks in Anatolia were sent back to the mainland but they didn't change their surnames to the initial form.
