From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. —the son of Izod,' or 'Ysolt,' or 'Isolda.' This batch of surnames was given up in despair by Mr. Lower.
I, myself, in my English Surnames, got astray in ascribing them to Isabel. Their origin is a very simple one, as given above; the fact being that Isolde was a very popular girl's name at the surname period. Ysolt is, of course, one of the names connected with Arthur's Court, coming in the episode of Tristan. It was very popular in Yorkshire and Cornwall, in the latter of which counties I find it a font-name within the last hundred years, in the forms of Isot and Izot. For other variants, v. Ezard and Izard.
