Ivarlak Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
The surname Ivarlak has a rather interesting history and belongs to a common type of Romanian surnames. It originates from a similar nickname. It has a complex structure and is derived from two words. The first of them: ivăr translated from Romanian means 'heck', 'grip' and the second lac means 'varnish'. Therefore, the nickname Ivarlak could have been borne by artisans. According to another version, at the base of the nickname Ivarlak is the old Belarusian word ivar, meaning 'blanket', 'bedspread'. In this case, Ivarlak could refer to those who sold or sewed blankets. The appearance of Romanian surnames in Russia had two historical reasons. The first was the mass migration of Moldovans who fled from the Turkish yoke. The first stream poured into Russia in 1711, when, after the defeat of the Russian troops on the Prut River, about four thousand Moldovans headed by Prince Dmitry Kantemir moved to Russia and settled there. The second stream of Moldovan immigrants joined Russia in 1736. In other periods during the Xviii-Xix centuries there were movements of small groups, sometimes individual migrants from Romania to Russia.
