From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Ivo' or' Ive,' diminutive Ivote, Ivette, or Ivetta (v. Ive). Ivo de Usegate was bailiff of York in 1271. A few years after we find the Church of Askam-Richard, close to the city, given by William de Archis, and Ivetta, his wife, to the Nunnery of Monkton. In 1729 Alicia Iveson was buried in St. Martin's, Micklegate. Thus in the one city we have memorials of the male, female, and hereditary use of this once famous font-name (v. History and Antiquities of York. Printed by A. Ward, 1785).
