This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Ivo' or 'Ive.' Miss Yonge has an interesting account of this name (ii. 349-50). Probably connected with Ives, the saint who gave the title to St. Ives in Huntingdonshire (who, legend says, was a Persian bishop, and set up a hermitage on that spot), and Iva, similarly commemorated at St. Ives in Cornwall The great Ivo de Taillebois reminds us of the Norman equivalent, St. Ives of Brittany; and St. Ivo de Chartres, imprisoned for his opposition to the adultery of Philip I, gave a natural impetus to the popularity of the name. v. This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Isan,' probably a Welsh personal name as it is found associated with Floyd. Also modem instances are found in Liverpool, where the Welsh population is so large.

The yew-tree is still known as the ‘ ife’ in Suffolk.

This name with some variations of orthography seems to have existed in several countries. The town of St. Ives in Cornwall was designated after Iva, an Irish saint, and that of St. Ives in Huntingdonshire after St. Ivo, a Persian archbishop. Ive was also an Anglo-Saxon personal name, and Ivo was the Norman form. The surnames Ives, Iveson, Ivison, Ison, and perhaps Ivett and Ivatts, are derivatives.
