From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
I cannot suggest any satisfactory derivation. Mr. Lower writes, 'There was a favourite character in the old Christmas games called Ivy, whose antagonist was Holly: and the frolics of the Holly-boy and the Ivy-girl were maintained in Kent (on St. Valentine's Day) till towards the close of the 18th century (Gent. Mag. 1779). See the Song of the "Holly and Ivy" quoted in Hone's Mysteries, where Ivy is made to be of the feminine gender:
"Holy and his mery men, they dawnsyn and they syng: Ivy and hur maydyns, they wepen and they wryng.
The singular name Ivymey, Ivimey, signifying Ivy-maiden, Mr. Ferguson thinks, may be from this source.' This view is not impossible. The surname King has generally so risen (v. King and Kingman); compare the nick.
Martin le Yungemey, Sussex, 1273. A. i.e. the young maiden.
1765. Married-Giles Ivemie and Jane Harris: St. George, Hanover Square.
1778.-Thomas Ivimey and Elizabeth Times: ibid.
1788.-John Davis and Ann Ivemey: ibid.
