IVAR: in Gaelic spelling Imhaer and Iomhar, a borrowing of the ON. personal name Icarr. It was a favorite forename with the Campbells of Strachur, and the name of Ivar Campbell of Strachur (in the first half of the sixteenth century) appears in contemporary documents as Evar, Euer, Evir, Ewar, Iver, Ure, Urie, Yvar, Yvir (HP., IV, index). Other recorded spellings are: Euar 1349, Ever 1478, Iwur 1326, Ywar 1359. It has been also erroneously rendered Eugeni us (HP., IV, p. 11). Ivar or Ivarr was a favorite name of the Danish kings of Dublin in the ninth and tenth centuries. See MaCiver.
