(Hebrew) Descendant of Jaffe, a pet form of Japheth (increase); variants of Joffe, q.v.
(from the name of a male ancestor) or (from the name of a female ancestor) The name Kalonymos (“beautiful name”) is a Greek version of the Hebrew Shem Tov and was popular among the Jews in the Middle Ages. In the sixteenth century one family selected only the translation of Kalon (“beautiful”) as the family name in the Hebrew form of Jaffe (Yafeh). Later on, other Jews selected the name in tribute to a matriarch by the name of Shayndel (from the Yiddish which means “beautiful”). The name also appears as Yaffe, Yaffin, and Joffin, Jaffin.

Source: Educational guess: My family is Jewish and has this last name. They immigrated from Lithuania to the USA during the late 1930s to 1940s. My guess is that our last name was transliterated.
