From Geoffroi, the NF. form of Old English Godfrith. Jaffray was an old family name in Aberdeen. Symon le fiz Geffrai and Piers le fiz Geffray, burgesses of Peebles, rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 198). Payment was made to David Geoffrey, Scottish merchant, for injuries and trespasses committed on him in 1474 (Bain, tv, 1412), John Joffray appears as witness, 1511 (Soltre, p. 84), and a later John Jofra was witness in Brechin in 1552 (REB., I, 233). William Joffra held a tenement in Linlithgow in 1536 (Johnsoun), Alexander Joffray was bailie of Edinburgh, 1596, and Alexander Jaffray, bailie of Aberdeen, purchased the estate of Kingswells in 1587. Robert Japhra, smith in Windiege, parish of Monkland, 1605 (Campsie). Alexander Jaffray was chosen provost of Aberdeen in January, 1636, on which Spalding says: "Many lichtleit both the man and the election," he "not being of the old blood of the toun, but the oy (grandson) of ane baxter, and therefor was set doun in the Prouest's deass befor his entering, ane baken pye, to sermon. This was done diverse times; but he miskend all and never quarreled the samen" (Memorials, Bann. Club ed., I, p. 40). Rev. John Jaffray was first Episcopal minister of Lonmay, Aberdeenshire, after the establishment of Presbyterianism (AEI., p. 64).
