A Surname of patronymic origin (also written Jáimez), infrequent and distributed by the provinces of Murcia, Valencia, Alicante, Barcelona, Madrid, Cadiz, Seville, Granada, Asturias, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Málaga, etc. Also in Hispano-America this last name is registered, where it was taken by Andalusian and Canary families. It comes from the name and surname Jaime, with the meaning of 'son or descendant of Jaime'. There were, therefore, different houses of this surname, not related to each other, being very old those that originated in Aragon, whose branches passed to Burgos, Andalusia and Canary Islands. Thus, the Aragonese Alonso Jáimez de Sotomayor was one of the most important personages in the conquest of Gran Canaria, where he arrived, in 1477, with Juan Rejón. They tried their nobility before the Real Chancillería of Granada, among others of this last name: Diego Jáimez, neighbor of Seville, in 1543; Antón García Jáimez, neighbor of La Roda (Albacete), in 1590, and Hernando Álvarez Jáimez Megía, neighbor of Jerez de la Frontera (Cadiz), in 1611.
