Jankowitsch Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
The surname Jankowitsch is a Germanization of the Serbo-Croatian surname Janković. Janko or Jan is the Slavic equivalent of the English name John. The addition of -ović is a common way to form patronymics, or family names, and commonly means 'son of'. When combined together, the name Janković would mean 'son of Jan/John' .The English equivalent would be the surname Johnson. The change from Janković to Jankowitsch took place through the influence of the Austrian Empire/Habsburg Monarchy (followed by Austria-Hungary), as they ruled over much of the Balkan region until being broken up following the conclusion of WWI. During the reign of this country over the region, a common practice to move up in society was to become more "German", which afforded more career opportunities to other ethnic groups within the empire. As well, the Habsburg Monarchy also supported the process of Germanization to counter the Magyarization being carried out by the Hungarian side of the empire. Overall this led many Slavs to reform their surnames into those with more German characteristics. As the German language does not commonly use surnames with the meaning 'son of', and instead frequently used professions as the origin for surnames, there was no direct translation from the original name Janković to Jankowitsch. Instead the need to break down Slavic names into phonetic equivalents came about. The Janko portion of the name is pronounced the same in German as in Serbian and Croatian, so that remained, but as the character ć is not present in German this changed. The equivalent to this single character in German was tsch, which when pronounced has a very similar sound. Furthermore, the character v as pronounced in Slavic languages, among others, is the character w in German, leading to that change. Coming together, the changes produced the Germanized surname of Jankowitsch, which overall has a similar pronunciation to Janković, but lacks an acknowledged meaning in German. The pronunciation of Jankowitsch in German using simple English phonetics is: Yan-cove-itch. The English pronunciation would be, again using simple phonetics: Jank-o-witch.
