The surname Jánovas comes from the abandoned village in the Pyrenees mountains (Province of Huesca in Aragon - Spain) with the same name. Jánovas had more than 200 inhabitants in 1900. The residents of the village were expropriated und evacuated for construction of a dam in 1960, a dam which would never built. The houses and the land belonged to the state for many years and become ruins. The project would never come to an end and the village and the struggle of their inhabitants against the state was forgotten. In 2008 the land was given back to the heirs of the inhabitants who were expropriated in the 60's and some houses are being rebuilt at the moment.It was very common in Spain to give the surname to a new inhabitant of a town or city to the place where he / she came from. This is the case of the Jánovas family, settled down in the little village of Sauté, also in the Pyrenees, where the surname comes from. Juan de Janovas or Juan Jánovas is the first name on record, name also given to the house where the family lives.
Juan Jánovas moved from Jánovas to Satué many ceturies ago. The family had no properties or relatives in Jánovas when the expropriation and evacuation of the land took place and was not affected about it. Many generations had lived in the house in Sauté and some of the people born in this house emigrated to other cities and countries like Huesca, Madrid, Barcelona, Frankfurt or New York for a living.
