The Jaudszims surname exists in variations such as Jaudzims, Jauncemis, etc. It can be traced back to the 18th century. The surname originated in the former area of Memel, which was a part of East Prussia (Ostpreussen) until 1945. Today, this area belongs to Lithuania. The early forms of the surname (such as Jauncemis) mean 'new settler'. The old German version of the word is Neusäß (Neu Ansäßig, Neuer Siedler), which means the same. The families that settled down in this area were apparently given that name by the locals, Lithuanian natives. Most of the families left the area of Memel (today Klaipeda region) in the winter of 1944/1945 and moved to other German territories in the west.
