The Jayousi family are descendants of Badr al-Din al-Jamali (1014-1094), an Armenian Mamluk who was bought as a child slave and worked his way up the military ranks showing bravery and loyalty where he was awarded by the Fatimid caliph al-Mustansir the Fatimid Emirate of Damascus.
The military character of Badr's office was exemplified by the title of Amīr al-Juyūsh (general of the Armies), which not only became the name most commonly associated with him, but was also used by Badr as his proper patronymic. His private army, some 7,000 strong, formed the core of a new force, called the Juyūshiyya, while his own descendants who settled in Egypt and Palestine were designated Juyush-i (also spelt Jayousi, Jayyusi and Jayoosi).
