From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

JEDBURGH: Of local origin from the town of the name in Roxburghshire. Several individuals or families of the name appear in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Robert de Giwrth was one of the witnesses to a charter of the lands of Molle, c. 1225—35 (RMP., p. 77). Robert de Jeddeworthe, parson of the church of Kermyghkel (Carmichael) of the county of Lanark rendered homage in 1296. His seal bears a priest robed holding the sacrament, and S' Rob'ti de edewrd cl'ic (Sain, II, p. 210,558.). About the year 1300 Vedastus de Jeddeword held lands off the monks of Melrose (Metros, p. 684), and in 1343 Thomas de Jedworth was a monk in the Abbey of Melrose (ibid., p. 424). In 1358 Robert of Jedworth received a safe conduct to travel in England for a year (Rot. Scot., I, p. 823), and Hugh of Jedworth was actornatus (attorney) of the prior of St. Andrews in 1390. The seal of Patrick Jedworth of Gamylschelis, 1464, is described by Macdonald (1434).
