A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

1 The ancient Breton name Judicaël gave birth to the twin-names Juhel and Gicquel, appearing in mediæval English records as Jukel and Gikel. Much has been written and conjectured as to the origin of Judicaël (e.g. see Notes & Queries, 18th Nov. 1899, p. 415), but it seems most probable that the first element is the Latin judic-em (acc.), a ‘judge’ (cp. the Langue d’oc judic, a judge), the second either representing the Welshhael, ‘liberal,’ ‘generous,’ or being a diminutive suffix.

Iudichel Venator.—Domesday.

2 for the French Jacquel = Jacque(s (q.v.) + the diminutive suff. -e)l.

Cp. Jewell.
