An aphetic form of ME. engynour, 'engineer,' one who operated engines of war. Early forms of the name in England are L'Ingenieur, Le Geneur, Gynner, etc. Anneys la Gynnere del counte de Berewyk rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 212). In 1392 there is reference to the tenement of Alan Gynowr in Edinburgh (Epidii, p. 27), Patrik Genour held lands in Inverness in 1452 (invernessiana, p. 122), umquhile Thomas Genor is referred to in 1492 (RSS., I), Donald Jenor, 'legislator,' is mentioned in 1499 (Cawdor, p. 101), William Genour was tenant of the Casteltoun, Ardmanoch in 1504 (ER., XII, p. 661), and John Jenour had sasine of his father's lands in the lordship of Ardmanacht in 1564 (ibid., XIX, p. 523). The spelling Junor occurs in Inverness.
(Anglo-French-Latin) Engineer, i.e. a worker of a ballistic engine [Middle English ginnur, genour, enginer, &c.; from Middle English engyn, engine; Old French engin, Latin Ingenium] Hugh le Ginnur.—Hundred Rolls William le Genour.—Parl. Writs.
(Scottish) One who operated an engine of war (an aphetic form of “engineer”).
Pott, in his "Die Personennamen insbesondere die Familiennamen," (Leipzig, 1853), considers this name a corruption of the classical Januarius; but I think the medieval ginour, a craftsman, engineer, or clever workman, a much likelier origin-a man of genius (ingenii) in any mechanical business. Waldinus Ingeniator (the engineer) occurs in the Domesday of Lincolnshire, as a tenant in chief.
An old form for Joiner.
From Gener. See Gaynar. Of this family are the baronets Jenner.
From the German, Jenner; from the Flemish, Jenar, Jenart; from the Dutch, Jener; from the French, Genvier; a personal name.
Sussex is the principal home of the Jenners; but the name is also established in Kent, Wilts, and Gloucestershire. The Jenners were "freemen" of Rye in the time of Charles II. (Hol.), and the name is still in the town.
