From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

From the barony of Gardyne in the parish of Kirkden, Angus, where there was long a family 'of that Ilk.' The name is now common in Arnbroath and neighborhood (Hay, Arnbroath, p. 422), and persons of the name have held lands in Aberdeen, Banff, and Perth for centuries. William Gardeyn of Angus and William du Gardyn of Edinburghshire rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 208,209). In the same year a writ was directed to the sheriff of Edinbergli in behalf of Henry de Gerdino (ibid., 832). Patrick Gardyne de eodem appears as witness, 1450 (REB., I, 141). Maister Gilbert Gardin was minister at Fordice, 1574 (RMR.). Mr. Alexander Gardyne in a letter to Lower states that in the entry of his aunt's death in the parish record she is entered as Margeret Gairden, while his father is entered as David Dalgaims (Lower, p. xx-xxi). In the local Angus pronunciation the name is clipped to Gairn, which see. Old spellings according to Lower (loc. cit.) are: Garden, Gam, Gardin, Gardne, Game, Dalgarn, Dalgarner, Dalgardns, Dalgardyne, and Dalgarna. Gairdin 1592, Gairdine 1677, Gairdne 1694, Gardin 1508.
