Perhaps from French Josse, from Jodoc or Judoc (a derivative of Breton jud 'battle'), the name of a famous Breton saint of the seventh century. A family named Joass were of considerable importance in Banffshire in the eighteenth century, and possessed the lands of Colleonard. William Joos was chaplain to King Robert III, 1402 (RMS., I, p. 651). Thomas Joce was bailie of Inverkeithing, 1359 (ER., I, p. 621). William Joss was tenant of Westhall, Aberdeenshire, 1513 (REA I, p. 355). Agnes Joas was rebuked in church "for having ane excommunicate persone at her marriage," 1661 (Rec. Elgin, II, p. 301). Rev. James Maxwell Joass of Golspie was a well-known antiquary. Joasse 1669, Joiss 1662.
