JOCELIN: A double diminutive from Josse, for the Breton saint-name Jodoc or Judoc (from Breton jud, 'fighter'; Latinized Jodocus). Jodocus (+669), an Armorican prince of Welsh extraction, became a hermit at Ponthieu, where he is still remembered as S. Josse. In Cornwall he is commemorated as S. Just. Jocelin or Goscelin was elected bishop of Glasgow in 1174 and died 1199 (Dowcen, p. 298—299) Gocelinus, archdeacon of Dunkeld, c. 1188 (Scon, p. 27; RAA., I, p. 141). Gilbert, son of Jocennus or Goscelinus, burgess of Aberdeen, c. 1189—99 (RAA., I, p. 57,136). Jocelin hostiarins to King William the Lion, a. 1214 (RAA., I, p. 260).
