An early sharpened form of Job. Robert Jon was burgess of Perth, 1353 (Scon, p. 128). John Joip was a tenant under the earl of Huntly in Tollebeig, Strathbogie, 1600 (SCM., IV, p. 265). James Jopp was merchant and stamper in Huntly, 1747 (Moray), and there was a burgess family of Jopp in Aberdeen, one of which was provost at the time of the visit of Johnson and Boswell. John Jopp was one of the Huntly Volunteers in 1801 (Will, p. 8). Jop 1622, Jupp maybe a variant spelling, Canon Jupp was founder of Aberlour (Banffshire) Orphanage.
