Oral history provided that the surname of Junk was Scot-Irish. Meaning that the surname originated in Scotland. The clan then migrated to Northern Ireland and on to Pennsylvania, USA. It was stated that it was once McJunkin, then shortened to McJunk, and then, Junk. McJunkin, in its various spellings, were found in Scotland and Northern Ireland, but none with the surname of McJunk.

It seems that the surname of Junk began as an occupational surname. Its meaning was 'to cut', as in flanks of meat, or 'to cut' a soft wood in the same manner. One junked the meat or the wood. In one instance the wood of a certain tree was cut in order to hollow out eating bowls, called cogies.
