User-submitted Reference

My grandmother told me that before her mother's family came to Wisconsin, they had arrived from Bohemia. At the time it was the Austrian Empire, and they decided to settle out west in the plains of south-eastern Nebraska. According to my grandma, my great-great-great-grandfather, a humble man named Franz Koftan, left his family behind in Europe to avoid a required military draft for the Austrian Army, roughly 25 years, prior to World War I. He wanted to start a family in America and live a quiet, simpler life, rather than fight for a nation that he privately opposed. After some time, he met a woman named Josefa Cerny, a fellow Bohemian, and then were married and decided to build a secluded farm in rural Pawnee County, Nebraska. He and Josefa had eight children, the youngest being my great-great-grandfather, Robert Albert Kaftan. After arriving in America, Franz changed his name to Frank, a common Americanized version of the European name. His last name was changed from Koftan to Kaftan for pronunciation purposes as well. My great-great-grandfather Robert moved to Wisconsin to attend the law school of University of Wisconsin at Green Bay. After graduating, he became a prominent lawyer in the greater Green Bay area and met a young teacher named Mary Cach. She, too, was of Bohemian/Slavic decent, and the two were married and had 4 children, the 2nd oldest, Elizabeth Kaftan, was my great-grandmother.
