Kanehl Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
The German family name is classified as being of occupational origin. The surname, Kanehl, can be described as a metonymic name, one in which the name of a substance or tool connected with a particular trade is used to denote a practitioner of that trade. Here, the Low (northern) German word, kanehl, denoted a spice known in English as cinnamon and thus the appellation served to identify the bearer as a 'cinnamon peddler', or, more generally, a 'spice dealer'. Spices were of great importance in the economy of medieval Europe, and the spice trade, because it involved a commodity that had to be obtained from distant places, generated great profits. Spice dealers in the cities were generally members of powerful trade guilds which protected their interests.Variants of the surname include Kaneel and Caneel.
One of the earliest references to this name or to a variant is a record of one Joannes Petrus Caspar Kanehl, who was baptized in the Rhineland town of Spiel on 22 March 1740, in the presence of his parents, Joannis Kanehl and Maria Hansen.
