They were village officers in India since the times of monarchy. Their job was to collect the land revenue. Kanumgo is a headman, a chief headman, and a patwari. The patwari used to look after the village register and accountants, with his immediate superior, the kanungo. They played a key role in the efficient revenue administration of a district. They were properly trained, and strictly supervised by the kanungos, tahsildars, revenue assistant, and deputy commissioner.

In Odisha, India they belonged to the most educated part of the society from since 12th century. As civilization grew citizens were divided into different professions for the running of the kingdom. The karana caste emerged at this time. Pattanaik, Das, Kanungo, Adhikari and Mohanty came under the Karana caste. They were given the position of writers, non-religious educators, land and revenue officers, birth and death record keepers, doctors, accountants etc. by the monarchs.

Karanas and Kanungos run deep in political power of the state. They still hold official positions in different high educated fields.

The Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Pattanaik , son of former Chief Minister of Odisha Biju Pattanaik. Both are Karana.

There is a folklore that the King of Puri Gajapati Raja made sub-groups from the Brahmin caste and instructed the Karana to work as writers and accountants. In pre-independence Odisha, Karanas and Kanungos held high officer positions in government bodies.

After Independence Karanas and Kanungos played a deep role in the development of the state. They dealt with social issues and spread awareness among underprivileged section of the society. They were the first ones to fight for the rights of the untouchables and destitute. They were known for their education and knowledge. Now Karanas form the biggest part of modernised Odisha.
