In 1924, after the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, in the result of the Greece Exchange Agreement; Turks were brought to Istanbul by ships from Ortamahalle, İsmailli, Hamzalı villages which belong to the Seres district of Thessaloniki, Greece. Later, from there, they were sent to Uzunköprü by train. These people were settled in the houses in Karayayla that had been vacated from the Greeks. These Turks were called Karabacak. Then, in 1935, other Turks came from Shumen, Bulgaria. They also settled in the village and they were called Macur (refugees). In addition, in 1937, there were those from Romania who settled in the village and these were called as Kardzhali.

The Turkish origins of this family name also find itself in Armenian variation as Karabadzhakian.

It is believed that the Armenian version of this family name was created through the addition of the -ian ending to it, which stands for 'the child of', just like Russian -ov(a) in Karabadzhakov(a), that can be found in Russia and Ukraine.

Karabacak is often translated as 'black leg' yet as the further research showed Karabacak was found to stand for 'a liar' or 'a card game cheater'.
