Karamales Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

According to family lore, the original surname in the town of Plaka on the island of Lemnos was "Karamanlis." When Thomas Angelo Karamanlis emigrated first to Egypt, then to the United States (c. 1916), either he changed the spelling to "Karamales" or it was inadvertently changed during the naturalization process. It is supposed to mean 'chocolate candy', presumably based on the word, caramel. Possibly it derives from Late Latin, calamellus, meaning 'sugar cane', a diminutive of calamus, meaning 'reed, cane', itself from the Greek, κάλαμος, though it may also have an (unspecified) Arab root, possibly coming through Arabic-speaking traders within the Ottoman Empire, which ruled the area for over 400 years.
