Karingal Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

Karingal was one of the original surnames in Ibaan, Batangas, Philippines. It is derived from the words ka, meaning 'very', and ringal meaning 'noble'. Thus, the surname Karingal means 'very noble'. During the Spanish Claverian Period, most Filipino names were changed and people were allowed to choose one from a book. The Principalias (the noble and the leaders of the communities) and those who could prove that the family had been bearing the surname for at least seven generations were allowed to retain their names. Thus the Karingals were able to maintain their surname, but hispanized to Cariñgal and later on Caringal. The male line of the Caringal family of Ibaan have been the town mayors since the early 1800s.
