As a family name, it first appears in the seventeenth century.

Jews who bear this name traditionally belong to the tribe of Levi and are often considered as Cohanim, which believed to be of direct patrilineal descent from the biblical Aaron. One tradition claims that the name bearers of this surname are of patrilineal descent from the biblical Zadok, the first high priest in Solomon's Temple.
