Katz is an abbreviation formed from the Hebrew initials of the term Cohen Tzedek (Hebrew: כהן צדק), which literally means "authentic priest" or "priest of justice". Jews who bear this name traditionally belong to the tribe of Levi and are often considered as Cohanim, which believed to be of direct patrilineal descent from the biblical Aaron. One tradition claims that the name bearers of this surname are of patrilineal descent from the biblical Zadok, the first high priest in Solomon's Temple.
