User-submitted Reference
The highest density of this surname was in the Arklow, Co Wicklow, area of Ireland during the late 1800's to early 1900's. Although some people believe it is linked to an old Irish name, I believe this is not the case.
As most of the name bearers belonged to the Church of Ireland religion (Anglican) and were deeply involved in all things maritime, and because of this particular spelling, ending in the 'on', I believe the old story that two brothers were shipwrecked off the coast of Arklow. They were French Huguenots and came from Brittany.
My maiden name was Kearon, my father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather all lived in Arklow, (headstones details going back to 1765).
