Keigwin Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
An ancient Cornish family. Mr. Dixon derives the surname from Welsh and Cornish roots signifying White Dog, and the three greyhounds argent in the arms seem to allude to this derivation.
This name is said to mean the white dog (kei-gwin), and the arms of the family are three greyhounds Argent. It is more probably from ke-gwdyn, the white hedge; or kea-gwdyn, the white enclosure; or perhaps rather from chygwdyn, the white house. D. Gilbert, under Perranzabuloe, says, "That as the miners impute the discovery of tin to St. Perran, so they ascribe its reduction from the ore, in a large way, to an imaginary personage, Saint Chiwidden; but chi-wadden is the white house, and must therefore mean a smelting or blowing house, where the black ore of tin is converted into a white metal." There is a place called Kegwyn St. Just in Constantine.
(Cornish British) White dog, from kei, a dog, and gwyn, white; figuratively, a hero.
(W. or (Cornish), White dog; and they carry three in their Arms. (variant: de Hond and Machell.)
