From the old lands of Kelloe in the barony of Hume, Berwickshire. Kelloe is also a place name in Durham and there is a Kellah in Northumberland. The surname was formerly common around Coldingham. William de Kellawe was bailiff of the king of Scotland in 1278 (Bain, II, p. 29). Richard de Kellow was a charter witness in Roxburgh, c. 1338 (BNCH., XXIV, p. 226), Patrick Kellow witnessed a notarial instrument dated 1442 (Home, 21), and John de Kello or Kellow was witness to a claim to a third part of Cranshaws in 1453 (Swinton, p. xxxix). Andrew Kelaw was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1484, and a later Andrew Kelo in 1542 (NSCM., I, p. 31, 58). John Kello, merchant of Edinburgh, and William Kello, shipmaster, probably a relative, are in record in 1490 (Bain, IV, 1565). Bartholomew Kello, collector of tax in 1545 (RPC., I, p. 15) was probably the Bartholomew Kello who was clerk of the diocese of St. Andrews in 1549 (Laing, 552), John Kelo was town bellman in Aberdeen, 1562 (Mill, Plays, p. 152), and Gilbert Kello was reidare at Balhelvy, 1574 (RMR.). Robert Kelo was burgess of Aberdeen in 1595 (CRA., p. 121), John Kello was retoured heir of John Kello, inhabitant of Biggar in 1618 (Inquis., 779), Charles Keillo in Aberdeen received payment for beer in 1639 (SCM., V, p. 154), and John Kello was servitor to the earl of Eglintoun, 1665 (Irvine, II, p. 194). James Kiloh served in the first Great War, and three men named Killoh from Gamrie and Alexander Keilloh from Auchterless were killed (Turriff). The surname was also formerly current in Shetland (1602) but is not now found there (Mill, Diary, p. lxxxix, 182).
