A family of this name seems to have acquired the lands of Reveden (Redden) probably at end of the thirteenth century, and had possession of them till after the Reformation (OPS., I, p. 442). They also possessed lands in the shires of Berwick and Dumfries. 'Sir' John Kene was a priest in Edinburgh, 1513 (Stodarti II), and Patrick Kene in Selkirk was fined £500 in 1590 (RPC., IV, p. 481). Richard Kene was served heir to his father John Kene, writer to the signet, in the lands of Redden, 1609 (Retours, Roxburgh, 52). Patrick Keine was burgess of Selkirk, 1642 (RRM., l, p. 97), Janet Kein is in parish of Borgue, 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. IX, p. 566), and James Kein, late bailie of Selkirk, 1698 (Peebles CR.).
