Germanic: Kerber is most likely a variant of the occupational surname Körber, meaning basket weaver. Applied as a metonymic occupational name for a basket maker or for a peddler who carried his wares around in a basket. In Bavaria it also denoted the occupant of a laborer's cottage built with wattle (i.e. interwoven twigs) and daub.
