Kerschbaumer Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

The Kerschbaumer surname comes from the Bavarian word Kerschbam or Kerschbaum, meaning 'cherrytree', High German Kirschbaum. Especially with the Bavarian settlement of southern Germany, Switzerland and Austria, place names and family names were often derived from typical local trees. The place name am Kirschbaum means 'at the cherry tree' referred to the place of residence or settlement of an owner. When first names alone were no longer sufficient, the family name was formed by adding -er to the tree name, which indicated the place of residence. This is a pattern for the formation of many surnames in Germany. So am Kerschbaum became Kerschbaumer. Old spellings also bring forms like Kerspamer.

- farhel

Especially in Bavaria, Austria and Upper Italy, farms or estates were often named after tree species occurring there: the estate near the oak, at the lime tree, at the pine, at the beech or even at the cherry tree. And derived from these farm names originated by appendix of -er family names such as Eicher, Pirker, Bucher, Kerschbaumer. Later, these family names were used independently of these farms.

So Kerschbaum means 'cherrytree' and the owner of such a farm at the Cherrytree was called Kerschbaumer.

- farhel
