Kessack Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

KESSOG: S. Kessog, a bishop and martyr of the sixth century, is specially connected with Luss on Loch Lomond. His name in old Gaelic, Cessoc, Ceasag, is probably the same as Cessan, "who is styled 'son of the king of Alba, and a chaplain of Patrick.' His name is a reduced form of some compound beginning with cess, a spear" (Watson I, p. 277,278). His bell is mentioned as still in existence in 1566 (RMS., IV). The endearing prefix mo 'my' is sometimes attached to his name, as Mechesseoc (1200) and Mahessoc (1211), and later misunderstood as Mac, in Mackessoc. He is commemorated in several place names. As forename: Kessog Findlauson, one of an inquest held at Dunipace, 1426 (Cambus., 87).
