Henry Hardy Catron published a book called 'Kettenring family in America: Kettenring, Kettering, Kettring, Ketring, Ketron, Cattron, Catron'. There were several editions of it. The last one produced was from around 1970.

In the introduction, he explains that Kettenring came from the German word for 'chain' (ketten) and 'ring', meaning a link in a chain. A man came over in the American colonial period, Jacob Kettenring, but I may not have that quite right. Henry had followed all of those additional names in the title, and how Kettenring had been shortened or modified over the years and generations. One of my Mom's ancestors grew up as a Cattron, but was then listed in the military records as Catron, so he kept that.
