Apart from Brahmins to perform Shri Jagannath's Niti Kaanti, a team included brave Kshatriyas to protect them in case of a war, a group of Karanas responsible for accounting Jagannath's treasury and armoury, a group of agriculturists and other tradesmen were brought from Puri, Kendrapada and Khordha. Khandual was title given to Karanas just as Buxi, Behera and Jena. In Odisha a few families of Khanduals exist as of now. Behera was a title mainly given to Brahmins, where as Jena was common for Brahmin, Karan and Kshatriyas.
