This surname is related to Kashmiri Pandits and refer to a clans of Brahmin (member of the highest priestly caste among the Hindus).Kashmiri pandits, also known as Kashmiri Brahmins, come from the Kashmir valley, mountainous region in the state of JAMMU AND Kashmir in India.
The society of Kashmiri Pandits is divided mainly into following sub categories:
1. Banmasi - who had first migrated from the valley during the rule of Muslim kings and later returned.
2. Malmasi - who stayed back in valley despite all odds and rots. Both categories had different customs and traditions.
3. Buhirs - Pandits who started doing business were categorized as Buhirs.
The difference between categories has faded and vanish due to mass migration from valley 1985 onward.
