A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

(English) belonging to Kiddal (Hall), Yorks, 14th cent. Kydhall = (prob.) Cydda’s Hall [Old English h(e)all] (Anglo-Celt.) mainly corrupt forms (through Kidwall, Kidwell) of the A.- Welsh Ccadwalla, a form of the Welsh Cadwallon (Catwallaun) and apparently of Cadwaladr (v. Cadwallader), although we find in an Anglo-Saxon charter the (diminutive) name Ceadela; and Kiddell, &c., may occasionally be for Cadell (q.v.), through the pron. Cādell.

The British King Cadwallon (c. 630) was called Ceadwalla by the West Saxons; and this latter name was borne by the King of Wessex who abdicated A.D. 688.

Kiddell, Kiddle, are common names in the West of England, esp. in Somersetshire.
