This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the kidder,' i.e. a huckster. 'Kiddier, a huckster. East' (Halliwell). An Act of Edward VI speaks of' the buying of anye come, fyshe, butter, or cheese by any such Badger, Lader, Kyddier, or Carrier as shal be assigned and allowed to that office'
(5 and 6 Edward VI, c. 14). A confirmation of this Act by Elizabeth alters Kyddier to Kydder. The name is frequently found in the Poll Tax, 1379, West Riding of Yorks, several instances being given below.

Most if not all the Kidders of England spring from Maresfield, co. Sussex, where they may be traced back as far as the reign of Edward II. Sussex Archaeolog. Collections. IX. 127.

Kidder: the man who wove kitts, or rush baskets. A butterkitt was one of those in which butter was carried to market. Our word “junket” comes from the curd being sold wrapped up, as it still is in France, in rushes (jonc). A kidder was also a huckster. Hence the surname Kidd when not a contraction of Christopher.
