There is a marked tendency in the anglicization of Connacht names to make giolla Kil rather than Gil. This is one of the many surnames to which this generalization applies. According to Woulfe the Gallen comes from St. Caillin, making the name Mac Giolla Chaillín. As Kilgallen or Kilgallen it is numerous in Co. Mayo, especially around Swinford, and as Kilcullen it is equally prevalent in the barony of Dromore West, Co. Sligo.
