A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

Lower and his successors record this as a Scottish surname, from Kilminster near Wick, Caithness. I have never come across the surname in record. The local pronunciation of the place name is Kilmster, which points to a Norse ending -ster. Bardsley's surnames Kilminster, Killmaster, Killmirter, certainly did not derive from the Caithness place name.
